This may seem tricky at first when you see yourself to be in a
tight or even dead end. But there’s always that little loophole
to turn things around and you can make a big difference to

2. Know your values What do you value most? Make a list of your
top 5 values. Some examples are security, freedom, family,
spiritual development, learning. As you set your goals for 2005
- check your goals against your values. If the goal doesn’t
align with any of your top five values – you may want to
reconsider it or revise it.

The number shouldn’t discourage you, instead it should motivate
you to do more than you can ever dreamed of.

3. Know your needs Unmet needs can keep you from living
authentically. Take care of yourself. Do you have a need to be
acknowledged, to be right, to be in control, to be loved? There
are so many people who lived their lives without realizing their
dreams and most of them end up being stressed or even depressed
for that matter. List your top four needs and get them met
before it’s too late!

4. Know your passions You know who you are and what you truly
enjoy in life. Obstacles like doubt and lack of enthusiasm will
only hinder you, but will not derail your chance to become the
person you ought to be. Express yourself and honor the people
who has inspired you to become the very person you wanted to be.

5. Live from the inside out Increase your awareness of your
inner wisdom by regularly reflecting in silence. Commune with
nature. Breathe deeply to quiet your distracted mind. For most
of us city slickers it’s hard to even find the peace and quiet
we want even in our own home. In my case I often just sit in a
dimly lit room and play some classical music. There’s sound,
yes, but music does soothe the savage beast.

6. Honor your strengths What are your positive traits? What
special talents do you have? List three – if you get stuck, ask
those closest to you to help identify these. Are you
imaginative, witty, good with your hands? Find ways to express
your authentic self through your strengths. You can increase
your self-confidence when you can share what you know to others.

7. Serve others When you live authentically, you may find that
you develop an interconnected sense of being. When you are true
to who you are, living your purpose and giving of your talents
to the world around you, you give back in service what you came
to share with others -your spirit – your essence. The rewards
for sharing your gift with those close to you is indeed
rewarding, much more if it were to be the eyes of a stranger who
can appreciate what you have done to them.

Self-improvement is indeed one type of work that is worth it. It
shouldn’t always be within the confines of an office building,
or maybe in the four corners of your own room. The difference
lies within ourselves and how much we want to change for the

This little known fact explains the trails beside the highways leading to the National Parks in the mountains of Canada and the USA. This has not been written about and is not advertised for fear of terrorists taking them hostage.

If you have ever been to one of them you may have noticed the Ravens. They are in the parking lots and picnic areas. You will see them walking around bumming food, and posing for pictures. They will hop up onto the hood of your car and threaten to take a dump if you do not hand over your hot dog! BB&B, big, black and beautiful! That has been said about Ravens too.

In The Canadian Rockies a good place to view these interesting phenomena is the Columbia Ice Field stop on the highway from Banff to Jasper, Alberta. At the foot of the Glacier the Elevation is aprox. 11000 ft ASL. There are normally about 30 – 40 Raven walking around the parking lot. The more inventive ones will climb onto the hood or roof of a car and spread their wings, going CAWW, CAWW, and then leap off. When the hit the ground they fake an injury and of course everyone rushes over to give them sympathy and FOOD!

As soon as the tour bus leaves they regain their health and stand around in groups discussing how good a job Blackie did with the bus from Vancouver.

If you want the last laugh hang around until dusk. This is when they all slink off and start to walk back down the roadside to Jasper. It is a long 2 Kilometers before the elevation is suitable for them to take off. You can see where the trail mysteriously ends. That is because they fly out from there.

It’s quite a sight to see, all those big black birds, sometimes 2 or 300 of them, walking single file along the side of the highway. There is not a sound until they are about 200 meters from the take of point. Then they start to mutter and jostle for position. They continue single file right up to the point where the jump off the cliff and soar downwards and away with a loud CAWWWWW!

In numerous programs I’ve conducted on performance appraisals, with Human Resource people (who are responsible for developing and implementing programs) and with line managers (who actually conduct the reviews) are often foggy about performance appraisal procedures. Here are some frequently asked questions.

Questions asked by HRD Professionals:

1. What are the essential ingredients of an effective performance appraisal program?

A successful program must meet the following requirements:

• It fits the organization, rather than ‘one size fits all’.
• It must be communicated to all involved.
• It must be sold to those who will conduct the appraisals.
• It provides training and ongoing resources to managers.
• It establishes controls and rewards to reinforce implementation.

2. Can I use other’s forms and procedures or must I develop a whole new program?

You certainly can see what other organizations are doing in relation to performance appraisals. However, I say adapt appropriately not adopt totally. What works for a large financial institution may not work in a family owned business. Use other programs as a guide, not a boilerplate. Get input from your line managers as well as employees regarding forms and procedures – they are the ones who ultimately will be the users.

3. Why do managers generally dislike performance appraisal programs?

Many managers are not convinced that the program is a good one or that positive results will be gained. Also, they are not properly trained to conduct the reviews. They hesitate to e honest for fear that subordinates will resent them and believe the review will be an unpleasant experience that might cause more harm than good. (This may be right if the program has not been properly planned and implemented.)

4 How much training is required and how should it be done?

Training must include three factors: basic HR information, performance appraisal skills and motivation to implement the program. Ideally it should be done in multiple sessions spread out over a period of time with small groups for proper discussion and practice. Some of the key topics could be how to clarify what’s expected; how to conduct an effective review; how to rate fairly, etc.

1. Why do most subordinates dislike performance appraisals?

Because it is often an unpleasant experience! Some common problems cited are:

• Expectations and outcomes are not clear.
• Fear to disagree with the boss and that it will be held against them.
• Criticism is used more often than praise.
• Bosses are defensive when challenged by subordinates.
• Bosses aren’t prepared.

2. How can I be sure I’m making a fair appraisal?

First of all, ask for input from others who are in a position to evaluate the performance of the person. Next, be sure that neither the ‘halo effect’ (a positive opinion of the individual) not the ‘horns effect’ (a negative opinion of the person) influences the appraisal. Also be sure that the appraisal is not based just on the most recent events.

3. How can I get the person involved so I’m not doing all the talking?

To encourage dialogue during the review, you can ask such questions as: What went well this past year? What problems did you encounter? What are some key goals for the coming year? What areas do you want to improve or develop? How can I best help you to achieve these goals?

4. How should I end the review particularly if the person is not doing a good job?

Always end on a positive note. First, thank the person for some specific good work done the past year. By recognizing achievements you create the motivation to achieve even more. Then move on to the area that needs improvement. Say something like, “I’m glad we had a chance to talk about your performance and how we can work together to improve it. I’m sure that together we can achieve positive results.”

Don’t just appraise but raise performance.

The most common technique for printing onto fabrics was silk

shirts. A process called sublimation has gained more popularity

Sublimation uses special inks called sublimation ink. This ink
is used to print your photograph on a special transfer paper,
and that along with heat, and pressure transfers the image to a
variety of materials such as cotton and polyester (T-shirts ),
metals, plastics, ceramics, and special high temperature
plastics such as Plexiglas, Mylar or melamine. Sublimation ink
is unique where it has the ability to convert from a solid to a
gas without going through a liquid form moving into the fibers
of the fabric. This conversion and ink transfer process creates
a crisp color with a highly defined image that is very durable.

Now that you the individual, have all this capability
available, what can you do with it? The basic starting point is
to take a digital picture and send it as is to one of these
houses to create a standard photo shirt. Lets go beyond the
standard picture and create custom pieces of art for yourself
that you can proudly wear.

Software packages like Adobe Photoshop have many capabilities
that allow you to customize your pictures. The question often
asked is well what should I do? The intent of this article is to
give you a few ideas to spark your creativity and see what fits

print it out, so I recommend that you take many pictures at
different angles, and of all key elements. Looking through the
viewfinder gives you only one perspective of the final picture,
however, once the image is on your computer screen your mind
will open the door to an unlimited world.

Things to consider when looking and photographing a car: 1. Is
there a large surface such as a sloping trunk with a minimal
amount of details? If so, this may make a great background where
you could overlay a side view of the car on the trunk. To add to
the personalized component, keep the license place in the
picture so it ties the picture to the owner.

2. Are there any distinctive features such as a massive open
grill as on many pre 1965 cars? This may also make a great
background to overlay a side view of the car in the grill.
Keeping any logos or license plate adds to the personalized
impact.

3. Many of the older cars have trim pieces that are art in
themselves. Take for example a 1958 Bel Air. The front fenders
and sides have bullet like trim that would make a great border.

4. Do not just focus on the exterior of the car, think about the
interior. How about those detailed and distinctive dash boards
and large buss like steering wheels. These also make a great
backgrounds. Imagine the car centered in the steering wheel
where you get a glimpse of the gages. Or for that fantasy effect
for a performance car, edit the speedometer to show a high
speed, and slightly blur the car to represent the speed.

The points above are general picture guidelines, but when
composing a picture for print on a fabric you must remember that
fabric does not have the depth and color representation of photo
paper to show the details. Fabric also has a matt finish so
these additional points must be kept in mind.

1. Keep the T-shirt image less busy, meaning, focus on the car
image, and less of background.

2. To minimize a hard edge around a square picture, have the
picture blurred or faded around the edges so it fades into the
fabric, This can be done by taking a straight edge and adding 10
pixels (on a 200 DPI) of fade, or even creating an irregular
outline like a irregular cloud fading into a fabric.

3. Try to make the foreground bold colors “BOLD” so the car
stands out.

4. Complement the picture with some descriptive text to further
personalize it, even if it is just the year of the car, or if
you are lucky to have 2 of more cars, even a saying such as
“Just cant have one!”

5. Lastly, remember to add that small text at the bottom with
your name for the added personal touch.

This is a brief list of things to consider, and in time your
mind will run with the endless possibilities. Your biggest
challenge will be to weed through those ideas, do some
experimenting and pick the best ones.
