Laser Engraving Process

Laser engraving is the process which uses lasers to engrave or mark designs or lettering on objects, and can be a very technical and complex procedure. Computer systems are often used to move the lasers during the engraving process, which are thought to be an advantageous alternative to traditional technologies such as bit heads, which required often and regular replacement. To better understand laser engraving, one must first understand the mechanics behind it. Engraving machines have 3 main components: A laser, a controller, and a surface. The laser can be considered to be like a pen; a beam is emitted from it allowing the controller to trace patterns on to the surface of the item being engraved. The controller, which is usually a computer system, controls the speed, spread, intensity, as well as the direction of the the laser beam, which is aimed at the surface during the engraving process. Surfaces are generally matched to what the laser beam will act on, which can be virtually any type of surface with the advanced technology of today.

The laser engraving process starts with the design. One must first conclude what graphic or lettering it is they want engraved as well as what item they wish to have it engraved on. Once this step has been completed, the controller, or computer system, is then programmed with the desired design or lettering. This will provide the laser beam with a particular path that will be closely monitored throughout the entire process. Once the laser is programmed, the desired object to be engraved is placed under the beam and the process begins. The engraving process varies in length of time depending on the size of the graphic. Once the laser has finished the programmed path, the object is then thoroughly looked over for errors.
