Best Starting Hands for Beginners

In Texas Hold ‘Em poker, certain hands are considered good starter hands to play. For beginners in the game it is wise to stick to these top starter hands, and fold any others.

The best starting hands in Texas Hold ‘Em are pocket Aces, paired faces and Ace King. AK or other face cards suited are also good starting hands. Pocket pairs 8 and above can be played too, especially from late position with no raise ahead of you.

Your goal is to win as many chips as possible and to minimize the chips you lose. You do this by folding poker hands that have very little or no chance of winning. For instance, 7-2 unsuited is very unlikely to materialize into a winner. Small pocket pairs will most likely be overpowered by the flop if you don’t hit a third to complete a set.

When you do get one of the best hands, the best tactic is to raise when you enter the pot. By raising, you accomplish several things. First, you get other players to fold, and therefore narrow the field of competition against your premium starter hand. You might win the casino pot right away. If you are called, then you are creating a bigger pot that you have a good chance to win.

Stick to playing the best hands and play them aggressively pre-flop.
